Ivan Alvarez, PhD
Applied Research Manager
Thomson Reuters
London, UK
I’m an applied research manager at Thomson Reuters, where I lead the design and deployment of user-facing machine learning solutions — from deep research initiatives to generative AI tooling. I’m especially interested in experimentation (online and offline) and robust approaches to ML model evaluation.
Previously, I worked at The Stepstone Group building semantic search systems, and at the BBC developing recommendation systems for media products, such as BBC iPlayer. Earlier in my career, I conducted research at the University of California, Berkeley, developing novel machine learning methods for cognitive neuroscience, and at the University of Oxford studying the neural underpinnings of 3D vision. I completed my PhD at University College London, where I investigated how the human brain reorganises under abnormal visual input.
